I’m always happy to hear from prospective students, postdocs, and collaborators who see opportunities to work together. If you're interested, please email me with a brief introduction, your CV, and what excites you about our work. I do my best to respond within two weeks.
PhD Students
NYU Environmental Studies PhD program is highly interdisciplinary (encompassing natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities to address environmental issues) and structured somewhat differently than most Environmental/Atmospheric Science or Ecology programs. Students are not admitted directly to work with one specific faculty advisor; instead, students are admitted as a cohort and are expected to work closely with multiple faculty. Thus, students do not necessarily apply to “my lab”, and hopefully will work to bridge research across multiple labs or research groups. Nevertheless, if you are excited to work with me for part of your doctoral research, I encourage you to get in touch.
When reaching out, it helps to mention:
- Your research interests and how they connect to our lab or department's work
- Your prior research experiences
- Your technical or academic background (programming, statistics, modeling, remote sensing, anthropology, social science etc.)
While our Ph.D. program guarantees 5 years of funding for admitted students, prospective students may also explore external fellowship opportunities.
- Simons Graduate Fellowship (July)
- NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) (November)
- Soros Fellowship for New Americans (October)
- Hertz Fellowship (October)
- AAUW International Fellowship (September)
- Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellowship (November)
- Fulbright Foreign Student Program (for international students; due dates vary by country)

Undergraduate Research
I welcome NYU undergraduates interested in gaining research experience. Opportunities range from assisting with ongoing projects to developing independent research, depending on your interests and availability. I have advised students doing research under the support of NYU Deans Undergraduate Research Fund. The deadline for Spring 2026 application is March 25th.
If you're curious, email Yi to set up a time to chat about potential projects.
